WNCC volleyball splits matches on Friday

                The Western Nebraska Community College volleyball team split a pair of matches in the second day of the Wyobraska Invite at Cougar Palace on Friday.

                The Cougars opened the day falling to No. 20 Laramie County Community College 25-21, 23-25, 25-23, 25-21 before wrapping up the day with a 4-set win over Central Wyoming College 25-19, 25-22, 23-25, 25-16.

                Other matches on Friday at WNCC saw LCCC down Iowa Western 25-9, 25-11, 25-21, Northeastern Junior College down Western Wyoming 25-8, 25-21, 25-18 and then Central Wyoming 25-17, 25-21, 25-14, and then Western Wyoming taking down Iowa Western 25-19, 25-20, 25-22.

                Action in the Wyobraska tourney also took place in Torrington, Wyoming, and those results included the Lancers dropping a pair of matches falling to Missouri State-West Plains 22-25, 28-26, 25-17, 16-25, 15-7 and then falling to Trinidad State 25-23, 25-16, 25-12.

                Other games at EWC on Friday saw Trinidad State topping Gillette 25-18, 22-25, 25-19, 25-22, 15-7; Lake Region State beating Colorado Northwestern 25-14, 25-14, 25-12; Casper beating Missouri State-West Plains 25-23, 25-18, 25-22; Casper beating Lake Region 25-16, 25-12, 25-16.

                WNCC will wrap up the Wyobraska Invite on Saturday with two matches, facing Iowa Western Community College at 11 a.m. and then Gillette College at 5 p.m. Other games at Cougar Palace on Saturday as Missouri State-West Plains taking on Central Wyoming at 9 a.m., LCCC facing West Plains at 1 p.m. and Iowa Western taking on Central Wyoming at 3 p.m.

                Action in Torrington will have Colorado Northwestern facing Gillette at 9 a.m., EWC taking on Lake Region at 11 a.m., Casper meeting Trinidad at 1 p.m., Lake Region facing Western Wyoming at 3 p.m., and Casper facing Colorado Northwestern at 5 p.m.

                In the first match of the day, The Cougars played well against LCCC, but came up short. Lilly Zwart led the Cougars on offense with 14 kills. Zwart also had four digs, two solo blocks, and nine assisted blocks.

                Dani Cruz was right behind with a double-double of 11 kills, 12 digs, and seven points. Kayana Gabriel followed with a double-double of her own with 10 digs, 10 points, nine kills, and four assisted blocks.

                Chloe Grady finished the contest with eight kills and two digs, while Charli Blackman had five kills, three digs, and two points. Finja Schul tallied four kills with seven digs, three points, and eight assisted blocks.

                Also for WNCC, Taylor Tyser had 25 digs, two set assists, and six points; Shae Hardy tallied 17 set assists with six digs and three points; Shanelle Martinez had a double-double of 17 digs, 26 set assists, three points, and three kills; and Maya Angelova tallied two solo blocks and six assisted blocks.

                In the win over Central Wyoming, where the Cougars won the first two sets, WNCC finished with a team total of 48 kills. Zwart led the way with 15 kills with two assisted blocks. Gabriel tallied 11 kills along with nine digs, eight points, four aces, and two assisted blocks.

                Cruz finished with nine kills with 10 digs, five points, and an ace, while Grady had five kills and five assisted blocks. Schul and Martinez each had four kills. Schul also had four digs, four assisted blocks, and eight points, while Martinez had 38 set assists, 11 points, nine digs, a solo block, and four assisted blocks.

                Also for the Cougars, Megan Bewley had seven points and six digs; Blackman had two digs; and Tyser had 25 digs, five points, three set assists, and two aces.
