  • Torres, Salgado, Aguilar named men’s soccer MVPs

                     The Western Nebraska Community College men’s soccer team made it to the semifinals of the Region IX tournament last fall and three sophomores stood out.                 Bernardo Torres, Hector Salgado, and Saul Aguilar all earned MVP honors at the WNCC all-campus awards that was released last month. The WNCC awards were held virtually because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The winners of the WNCC all-campus awards were derived from nominations from the WNCC community and then a committee sorted through the nominations.                 The MVP honors for the three symbolizes what the three meant to the team according to Torres, a sophomore from Brazil that signed to play at Briar Cliff University next year.
  • Arcy Salgado heading to William Woods for soccer

    When Arcy and Hector Salgado came to Western Nebraska Community College two years ago to play soccer, the two had dreams of playing at a higher level. The twins will get to do that, but it won’t be at the same school like they did in high school in Eaglecrest High in Denver and at WNCC. Hector signed with Knox College earlier in April and Arcy was still looking around. Arcy finally found a school to play at and will be headed to William Woods University in Missouri. Arcy is the second Cougar to sign with William Woods as Saul Aguilar signed there back in February.
  • WNCC’s Hector Salgado headed to Knox College

    When Hector Salgado came to Western Nebraska Community College two years ago, he was raw. In two years at WNCC, Salgado became one of the Cougars’ top scorers, finishing just one goal shy of being one of 12 players to score 10 goals in his career. Salgado will be taking his talents to the NCAA Division III level after committing to Knox College recently. “I picked Knox because I wanted to think long term in what I wanted to do,” he said. “They have a prestigious academic program that I wanted to be a part of for my major and they compete for championships every year, so I continue while also playing the sport I love.”
  • WNCC’s Matty signs with Missouri Valley for soccer

    Western Nebraska Community College’s Daniel Matty found a connection at Missouri Valley College that made his decision to sign with the Vikings an easy one. Matty signed the early part of March with Missouri Valley because of the relationship he made with former Cougar soccer player and now Missouri Valley assistant coach Mark Campbell. “Coach Campbell, who is a WNCC alumni, came in contact and we built a comfortable relationship between ourselves,” he said. “I would say they are one of the best teams in the country and that was my approach to moving on to compete somewhere and better myself. I think I can do that at Missouri Valley.”
  • WNCC’s Torres inks with Briar Cliff for soccer

    When Bernardo Torres came to Western Nebraska Community College two years ago, he didn’t realize the impact WNCC would have on his education and playing. Now, after two years on the WNCC men’s soccer team, Torres will continue his collegiate soccer playing at Briar Cliff University in Iowa, a NAIA institution. “After going to the visit and interest from other schools besides Briar Cliff, I choose there because the people there made me feel like home. They have a good academic program and also a good soccer program. They had a really good season which interested me a lot. They have some Brazilians there as well and they really wanted me to go there. I felt that was the right choice.”
  • WNCC soccer teams ready for regional tourney semifinals

    The Western Nebraska Community College men’s and women’s soccer teams are ready for the semifinals of the Region IX tournament with hopes of bringing home a regional title this weekend. Both teams earned a berth in the semis, which will be played this weekend at Metro State University in Denver, with impressive first-round wins last weekend.
  • WNCC men earn overtime win over Trinidad State

    PUEBLO, Colo. – The Western Nebraska Community College men’s soccer team had to go on the road for the first round of the Region IX tournament to face Trinidad State Junior College. WNCC, who was the No. 5 seed in the regional tournament, pulled the upset in topping No. 4 Trinidad State with a 2-1 overtime win over the Trojans. The win advances the Cougars to the semifinals on Saturday in Denver against No. 1 seed Laramie County Community College at 4:30 p.m. The other semifinal will pit Northeastern Junior College against Otero Junior College at 7 p.m. The winners advance to the finals on Nov. 3 at Metro State in Denver.
  • WNCC men fall to NJC

    The Western Nebraska Community College and Northeastern Junior College men’s soccer teams battled tooth and nail in the first half of the conference match Saturday at Landers Soccer Complex. It was the second half that saw a different tone to the game as the two squads scored four goals. Unfortunately for the Cougar men, they came up on the short end, falling 3-1 to the Plainsmen to fall to 9-6 overall and 6-4 in conference play. WNCC will take the fifth seed into the playoffs next weekend.
  • WNCC men capture two wins over weekend

    The Western Nebraska Community College men’s soccer team captured its ninth win of the season with two hard-fought wins in Wyoming over the weekend. WNCC opened the weekend by getting two goals each from Saul Aguilar and Hector Salgado in rolling to a 5-2 win. The Cougars followed that up with a heart-pounding 1-0 win over Northwest College on Sunday. Northwest was coming off a 2-1 overtime loss to Northeastern Junior College on Saturday.

    Four different Cougars netted goals as the Western Nebraska Community College men’s soccer team earned a 4-1 win over Western Wyoming Community College Saturday afternoon at the Landers Soccer Complex. The Cougar men have now won four of their last five matches. The win was also huge as the Cougars rebounded from a 6-0 loss to Laramie County Community College on Friday. WNCC head coach Todd Rasnic said his team played well and distributed the ball.
  • WNCC men shutout by LCCC

    The Western Nebraska Community College men’s soccer team had its 3-game winning streak snapped to Region IX conference-leading Laramie County Community College 6-0 Friday afternoon at the Landers Soccer Complex. The Cougar men were outshot 12-6 in the contest by a Golden Eagle squad that received votes in last weeks’ NJCAA national poll. Friday afternoon, the Golden Eagles netted three goals in each half for the final margin.
  • WNCC men top Sheridan for third straight victory

    The Western Nebraska Community College men’s soccer team scored three, second-half goals in coming back to down Sheridan College 3-1 on Saturday at a windy and cold Landers Soccer Complex. Matheus Lima scored two of the goals to help the Cougars to their third straight conference win.

    The Western Nebraska Community College men’s soccer team put together a strong defensive effort in recording a shutout win over Central Community College-Columbus Saturday afternoon at Landers Soccer Complex. WNCC’s 2-0 win over Central-Columbus snapped a 3-game losing skid and gave the Cougars their first conference win. WNCC is 4-4 overall and 1-3 in conference action.

    STERLING, Colo. – The Western Nebraska Community College men’s soccer team scored early, but then let the Northeastern Junior College men dictate play the rest of the game as the Plainsmen registered a 4-1 win Tuesday evening in Sterling, Colorado.

    GILLETTE, Wyo. – It wasn’t easy but the Western Nebraska Community College men’s soccer team earned a 3-2 win over Dakota County Technical College on Sunday in Gillette, Wyoming. The Cougar men have won three straight matches now heading into a conference contest Wednesday at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colorado.

    GILLETTE, Wyo. – Ygor Brito scored twice and the Western Nebraska Community College men’s soccer team had its way with the Montana State club team in posting a 7-0 win Saturday in Gillette, Wyoming. WNCC moves to 2-1 on the season and will battle Dakota County Tech College Sunday in Gillette, Wyoming.

    COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa – The Western Nebraska Community College men’s soccer team rebounded with authority on Saturday in bettering No. 12 Illinois Central College with a dominating 2-0 win Saturday in Council Bluffs, Iowa. WNCC, who dropped a 6-0 contest to Iowa Western Community College on Friday, responded with great tenacity in getting their first win of the season.
  • WNCC men’s soccer opens season Friday in Iowa

    The Western Nebraska Community College men’s soccer team will open the season this weekend in Council Bluffs, Iowa, with hopes of improving upon last year’s 9-6 record. To aim for a double-digit win season, the Cougars will sport a team filled with plenty of returners along with a talented group of freshman when they take on Iowa Western Community College on Friday before facing pre-season No. 12 Illinois Central College on Saturday.
