  • Mueller, Fuchs, Passos named WNCC women’s soccer MVPs

                    Freshman Destiny Mueller and sophomore Bethany Fuchs combined for 17 goals while sophomore Rafaela Passos was what kept the Western Nebraska Community College women’s soccer team togetheras the captain last fall.                 The three players performances on the pitch last year for WNCC helped the three earn MVP honors at the WNCC all-campus awards that was released last month. One other women’s soccer player also earned an award at the WNCC all-campus award ceremony and that was Caroline Vieira, who was named one of five Unsung Hero Award winners. Vieira, a sophomore from Brazil, was an Unsung Hero recognition along with volleyball player Gabriela Canavati, softball player Sam Davis, baseball player Chandler Young, and women’s basketball player Yuliyana Valcheva.
  • WNCC’s Fuchs signs with Concordia University

                    Western Nebraska Community College’s Bethany Fuchs came to Western Nebraska Community College from Colorado to play soccer, but has always considered Nebraska a home-away-from-home.                 Fuchs, after two years as a Cougar, will continue her collegiate playing in her new home of Nebraska after signing with Concordia University in Seward recently.                 “I am going to Concordia University in Seward and I choose to go there because, in a sense, Nebraska is a home-away-from-home,” she said. “I had a few friends that went there in the past. Jose [Fernandez] and Leo [Palomo] signed their last season. It is nice to know some people out there. When I visited the university, I felt like everything clicked for me right away. I knew that was going to be my next home.”
  • WNCC soccer players Ornelas, Haferkamp ink with 4-year schools

    Two more Western Nebraska Community College women’s soccer players are taking their talents to the four-year level after signing letters of intent the middle of March. Rafaella Ornelas, from Belo Horizonte, Brazil, will be taking her soccer skills to Judson College in Illinois, a NAIA school that went 1-1 at the NCCAA National tournament. Lisa Haferkamp, from Almere, Netherlands, will also be taking her talents to the NAIA level after signing with St. Thomas University in Florida. St. Thomas finished the season last fall with a 10-6-1 record and going 1-1 in the Sun Conference Tournament.
  • WNCC soccer players Passos, Vieira ink to continue playing at NAIA schools

    When Rafaela Passos came to Western Nebraska Community College three years ago, she had a vision to keep playing soccer. An ankle injury her freshman year made her stay in Scottsbluff a little longer. But, at the same time, she brought in another Brazilian, Caroline Vieira, and now both will be continuing their playing careers at the four-year level. While Passos and Vieira played with each other the last two years for the Cougars, they will be on opposite side of the fields when they head to their new schools, which are in the same NAIA conference in Tennessee. Passos will be attending Bethel University while Vieira is headed to Cumberland University.
  • WNCC women's soccer tops NJC, moves into semifinals

    Litzi Delarosa scored a first-half goal and that was all the Western Nebraska Community College women’s soccer team needed as they earned a 1-0 win over Northeastern Junior College in the first round of the Region IX tournament at Landers Soccer Complex Saturday afternoon. The win was WNCC’s 13th of the season and moves the Cougars into the semifinals of the regional tournament next Saturday at Metro State University in Denver against Gillette College. The finals are slated for Sunday, Nov. 3.
  • WNCC soccer teams ready for first-round games this weekend

    The Western Nebraska Community College men’s and women’s soccer teams will be vying for a spot in the final four of the regional tournament as the two squads enter the Region IX playoffs with first-round games on Saturday. The WNCC women, who enter with an impressive 12-3 record, enter regionals as the No. 3 seed and will host Northeastern Junior College at Landers Soccer Complex on Saturday beginning at 1:30 p.m. While the women host a first-round contest, the Cougar men will hit the road for a contest on Saturday against Trinidad State Junior College. The men’s contest starts at 2 p.m.
  • WNCC shutouts NJC for 12th win of season

    The Western Nebraska Community College women’s soccer team closed out the regular season with a 3-0 shutout win over Northeastern Junior College Saturday afternoon at Landers Soccer Complex. The Cougars move to 12-3 on the season and 7-3 in conference play. WNCC will enter next weekend's Region IX tournament with the third seed. The 12 wins are the second-most wins in school history. The top mark is 19 wins, set back in the inaugural season in 2003.
  • WNCC women’s soccer win twice for 11th win of season

    The Western Nebraska Community College women’s soccer team continued its spectacular season with a pair of conference wins over the weekend to improve to 11-3 overall. The Cougars opened the weekend as five different Cougar players scored a goal in a shutout performance over Central Wyoming College 5-0 on Saturday. WNCC continued playing strong, showing off its scoring depth as four Cougars netted a goal in a 4-2 win over Northwest College on Sunday.
  • Mueller nets overtime winner for WNCC women’s soccer

    Western Nebraska Community College’s Destiny Mueller has a flair for the dramatics. The former Gering Bulldog netted two goals, including the overtime winner to give the Cougar women a 2-1 win over defending Region IX champions Western Wyoming Community College Saturday afternoon at the Landers Soccer Complex.

    The Western Nebraska Community College women’s soccer team played tough but all No. 4 Laramie County Community College was one goal in topping the Cougars 1-0 Friday afternoon at the Landers Soccer Complex.

    A day after falling to Gillette College, the Western Nebraska Community College women’s soccer used a 2-0 shutout performance Saturday against Sheridan College in windy and cold temperatures. The Cougars scored a goal in each half to improve to 8-2 on the season. Caroline Vieira, who had both assists on the goals, said they played much better than Friday against Gillette.
  • WNCC women shutout Central-Columbus 5-0

    The Western Nebraska Community College women’s soccer team had five different players score a goal in registering a 5-0 Region IX shutout over Central Community College-Columbus in the Cougars home opener Saturday at Landers Soccer Complex. WNCC assistant coach Henri Prieels said both teams played well. Prieels said the Cougar women had a nice offensive output in the first half, scoring four goals.
  • WNCC soccer set for home openers against Central-Columbus

    After being on the road for the past four weeks, the Western Nebraska Community College men’s and women’s soccer team will make its first appearance at Landers Soccer Complex Saturday afternoon when they take on Central Community College-Columbus. The WNCC women, who fell for the first time last week to Trinidad State Junior College, will take to the pitch at 1:30 p.m., while the Cougar men will take on the Raiders at 4 p.m.

    LA JUNTA, Colo. – The Western Nebraska Community College women’s and men’s soccer team split matches on Saturday against Otero Junior College in Region IX conference action. The Cougar women rebounded from their first defeat of the season on Friday against Trinidad State Junior College with a thundering win over Otero 1-0.
  • 19th-ranked WNCC moves to 5-0 with win over NJC

    STERLING, Colo. – The 19th ranked Western Nebraska Community College women’s soccer team moved to 5-0 on the season after earning a 3-1 win over Northeastern Junior College Wednesday in Sterling, Colorado. The Cougars 5-0 start is the best since the 2003 team that went 19-0 before falling for the first time in the district tournament. The 2003 team reached a No. 8 ranking. The last time the Cougars were ranked was in 2008 as they were ranked as high as No. 11.
  • Fuchs hat trick leads Cougars to 12-0 win

    GILLETTE, Wyo. – Bethany Fuchs scored a hat trick and the Western Nebraska Community College women’s soccer team remained unbeaten on the young season with a 12-0 win over Dakota County Technical College Sunday in Gillette, Wyoming. It marks the best start for the WNCC women’s soccer team since 2013 when that team also went 4-0 to start the season. The 12 goals scored in the game is the fourth-most in school history. The top three marks of 18, 16, and 15 were all scored in 2003, the first year of the soccer program.

    GILLETTE, Wyo. – The Western Nebraska Community College women’s soccer team received a goal by Destiny Mueller in the final 10 minutes to register a 2-1 win over Mount Marty College Saturday at Gillette, Wyoming. The win keeps the Cougar women unbeaten on the season after topping two national powers last weekend in Iowa Western Community College and Barton Community College.

    COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa – The Western Nebraska Community College women’s soccer team remained unbeaten with another shutout on Saturday over Barton Community College, a team that received votes in the latest NJCAA pre-season poll. The Cougar women, who knocked off No. 3 Iowa Western Community College in overtime on Friday, continued the defensive intensity on Saturday, in beating Barton 2-0.

    COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa – The Western Nebraska Community College women’s soccer team opened the season in grand fashion, earning a 1-0 overtime win over No. 3 Iowa Western Community College Friday in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Rafaela Passos, the sophomore captain, booted a penalty kick with about four minutes to play in overtime for the game-winner.

    The Western Nebraska Community College women’s soccer team will open the regular season this weekend and it won’t be an easy trip as the Cougars open against two nationally ranked teams in Council Bluffs, Iowa. WNCC, who finished 4-8-2 a year ago, is up to the competition. The Cougar women open the season when they face pre-season No. 3 Iowa Western Community College on Friday and then pre-season honorable mention Barton Community College on Saturday. Both teams made the national tournament a year ago.
  • WNCC athletes earn NJCAA academic honors

    The Western Nebraska Community College softball and women’s basketball teams along with 18 individuals garnered NJCAA Academic honors this summer. Two individuals had the highest academic honors, claiming recognition on the Academic All-American First Team with perfect 4.0 GPAs. Freshman Caroline Vieira from the women’s soccer team and sophomore Eva Langton from the women’s basketball team, were one of 1,616 athletes in the NJCAA to earn First Team honors among the 6,656 junior college athletes on the list.
